Might as well answer my own question!
I'm probably alone in thinking this but Molly really annoys me, so for Alex to stay in the 80s minus Molly would be fine by me, but I suppose I'd like to know she was at least safe. I don't quite wish death on her.
I'm also probably alone in not wanting full blown Galex. I like the awkwardness and the cute bits, but I think if it went 'all the way' it would just be a bit... I dunno, I just wouldn't like it.
And of course Gene and everyone MUST be real, at least in some kind of sense. For it all to turn out to be two people's constructs would not only be almost a waste of 3 years of obsessive Ashes theories, but also a bit lame I think. I keep saying it but to find out it was modern day Gene that ran Sam over in LOM 1.1 would be absolutely fantastic!

You're not alone. I don't want full-on romantic!Galex, either. I like that there's some tension between them, and I don't mind the flirting, but I much prefer their working relationship and friendship (which is something that would need more focus after the events of 2x08, IMO).

after mulling this over, I realised the answer lies in my fanfic. :doh:

I have realised that for living in 2010, i am VERY anti-2008...So, my ideal ending? Alex in 1983, with Gene and Co, maybe a member short, just for something to cry about. (After all, you can't make it totally happy, can you?

I wouldn't be surprised if you're right and that does happen. I actually thought Chris was going to be killed off in 2.8 by saving one of the team members' lives as a means of redeeming himself.

Also MG answered a question I had put to him about music in S3 and he told me that

This is how I want it to end, Alex goes back to the present 2008 - but she's just left 1983 and Gene has been shot, she doesn't know if he died or not - few weeks later, she's back at work, back with Molly / Evan etc, when she finds that she's getting a new DCI who of course is Gene Hunt. This means he's died in 1983 and ended up in 2008 somehow to stay, and has to get used to 2008 and also can finally be with Alex (and Molly if everone wants her to be around lol)
This leaves a grieving Shaz. Cris, Ray and the rest of Fenchurch East back in 83 - and THIS COULD BE THE

I'd end it with GALEX but not just a kiss. I want them to be together.

This either means that:

Alex stays in the 80s

Gene comes forward in time to 2008.

I personally would love the idea of Gene being shot dead in 1983 and waking up in 2008 (with Alex) simply because the thought of Gene Hunt trying to adapt to 2008 and the whole way policing has changed would be hilarious. Plus he and Alex get to stay together and she gets to go home to Molly too. It would even things out as well, since Sam Tyler went back and stayed in the 70s, someone from the past has to come forward to the 21st century. . . .

I also like the idea that Gene is a 2006 policeman who was shot and went back in time to the 60s (or earlier) although this one possibly isn't too feasible . . .

However, if she's going to stay in the 80s I like the theory that she stays and grows old with Gene and its her (or Gene) who fired the "missing" gunshot on the riverbank to protect Molly from Layton.

I want GALEX though and not just "they kiss and then she wakes up in 2008 and they never see each other again blah de blah" because that would just be SO unsatisfying. :sad:

That gunshot was obviously put in for a reason, and this would be perfect reason!
