If this theory has already been posted elsewhere, then sorry. The final few images of Gene showed him observing the carving of his original force epaulette number 06-06-20 on Alex's desk. As Gene entered his office a reflection appeared on the office door of his younger self as a PC. Gene sustained a head wound to the left hand side of his head, however in the reflection there is no longer any sign of this injury.

Reflections and mirror images have been a significant part of A2A. Both Gene and Alex died from a gun shot wound to their heads.

Alex has made Gene aware of his untimely and tragic death and the reason and purpose for his existence.

During the last 3 series of A2A the focus has been on Alex fighting to return home, but to flip this theory maybe it was all about Gene Hunt finding his own peace in his own world. I know this is a bit spiritual but there you go.

To me, it just represented Gene remembering himself as he was before he took a bullet to the face. A young copper eager to set the world to rights.

Which could mean that he has forgotten again.

Gene has spent the majority of his existence in this world. As such he may have already forgotten Elements of Ray, Chris, Shaz and yes even Alex. I don't think its deliberate, but it would allow him to do what he does. Considering they all knew that Alex knew Sam Tyler. You would have thought that they would have been more open and at least talked more about him. But I think all of their memories have been affected. The longer you are there, the more you forget.

There may have been an element of truth in what Thordy said in the interrogation.
"This world is different, you forget things"

Very likely the case. *nods* Gene kind of has to forget in order to sustain himself in "his" world, in order to do what he does. Eventually, the cycle will be repeated again, and again, and again, until it can't be anymore. It's likely some sort of scenario would, eventually, be concocted in order to explain what happened to Alex, Ray, Chris, and Shaz, which -- at some point -- someone would have to investigate, in order to restart the cycle.



Gene, ultimately, forgot he was dead. So did Ray, Chris, and Shaz. I imagine Sam forgot for a while, too, but ended up remembering somehow. Maybe even Annie. In S3, Alex virtually forgot about Molly, forgot about wanting to go home to her. It wasn't until the farmhouse that she remembered.
